In 1967 five actors, Zeneida “Bibot” Amador, Carmen “Baby” Barredo, Leo Martinez, and Tony and Monica Mercado, fueled with passion and talent, set up Repertory Philippines Foundation. The vision for the company was to create and develop an interest in culture and the arts in the country; build a theater industry by promoting the establishment and operation of a school for Performing Arts, to provide scholarships for deserving artists that would enable talented Filipinos—actors, directors, producers, designers, technicians— to work at what they loved; and to make theater-going a social habit in the Philippines.
In line with this vision, Repertory Philippines Foundation, Inc., a professional theater company, has for 53 years endeavored to raise funds and solicit contributions for the accomplishment of this purpose. They have consistently succeeded in producing plays and musicals of universal interest in English, to promote the English language which is vital in this time and age and is sadly, sorely disappearing in the country, and has set standards of artistry for both production and performance in the Philippines. From its modest beginnings, it has become the most well-known and respected theater company in the Philippines.
The combination of scholarly training deserving artists and exposing them to world class plays, has made REP a breeding ground for artists who have become multi-talented and disciplined seasoned performers who have earned reputations of excellence both here and abroad. This passion to freely train Filipino talent, as well as bring a high standard of theater to the Filipino community by bringing theater to the community continues to this day and REP is committed to maintaining this standard of excellence.
There is something for everyone that REP can teach and train and perform – comedies, musicals, dramas, classics, production and sound design, set and costume design, and always something for the children. We strive to make theater great in this country and to make a difference in the lives of the Filipinos.
